Overview
Mei-Ling Zhou, also known as Mei, is a Chinese scientist and adventurer who first appeared as a playable hero in the original Overwatch video game. She specializes in climatology and was part of an international team stationed at an eco-watchpoint in Antarctica. The team’s goal was to study the effects of climate change on the environment, particularly rising temperatures.
During their expedition, Mei’s team was caught in a catastrophic storm that left them stranded and without supplies. In a desperate attempt to survive, Mei put herself into a cryogenic sleep, hoping to be rescued in the future. However, she was awakened nine years later to a world that had drastically changed due to the global crisis caused by climate change. The crisis led to food and water shortages, as well as political and social instability.
Determined to use her expertise to help address these challenges, Mei joined Overwatch, a multinational peacekeeping force created to restore order to the world. As an Overwatch member, Mei applied her scientific knowledge to develop innovative technologies and strategies to combat climate change and its consequences. She also actively participated in various missions and battles alongside her fellow Overwatch agents, using her freezing technology to subdue enemies and provide cover for her team.
